The 28th Brixia Meeting goes to Lombardy

Once again Italians triumph after years of foreign dominance

The German teams from Baden Württemberg and Bavaria lead the team rankings. 16 gold medals go to Italy: 5 for girls, 11 for boys. The World Youth championships will take place from July 8th to 12th.

The 28th edition of the “Brixia Meeting” is coming to an end with Lombardy edging out the two powerful German teams from Baden Württemberg and Bavaria. This year’s event was highly anticipated as it introduced the newly renovated running tracks which will be the venue of the next World Youth Championships “Südtirol 2009” in program for July 8th to 12th, first time ever taking place in Italy. Italian athletes won a total of 16 gold medals: 5 girls’ categories and 11 in the boys’. Twelve Italians succeeded in reaching the minimum necessary to qualify for the World Youth Championships. Among them, five are newcomers: Re, Tricca, Pilato, Masolini and Riva.
Two local South Tyroleans also reached the podium at this 28th edition of the “Brixia Meeting”, the most classic of all European Youth qualification events. Both athletes are well positioned for the competition in July: Matteo Didioni from Bressanone/Brixen, third in the 100m in 11:23 seconds (and with a personal best of 10:86”) and the walker Stefanie Ravasi, bronze medal in the 5km walk with a time of 27’14”.
Satisfied with the “Brixia Meeting” event were also the two officials from the IAAF who attended the event: Jorge Salcedo from Portugal and Imre Mafrahazi from Hungary. “The only area where we still have to work on is when moving support staff, judges and athletes on the field” says WC Event Manager Bruno Cappello, adding: “but we have to admit that the Brixia Meeting is hardly comparable to the WC. This meet packs a lot of competitions into few hours and we established that the flows are working well. Let’s say, we are pleased with the overall outcome.”

Team Ranking:
1. Lombardy 369.5 Pts
2. Baden-Würtemberg 365
3. Bavaria: 311
13. South Tyrol 129
